Events for International Dark Sky week – Wednesday 3rd April 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a fantastic turnout in Ballycroy for our first event for International dark sky week today.  We were treated to an on screen explanation of the night sky by Caoimh\u00edn de Bhail\u00eds  Through the irish language, Caoimh\u00edn explored the myths and legends behind constellations as well as some astronomical treats currently visible on clear nights under dark skies.  We looked at Jupiter\u2019s moons, the comet 12P pons\/brooks and the nearest Andromeda galaxy, visible with the naked eye for those lucky enjoy to live under skies free from light pollution.   Caomh\u00edn also gave us a tour of the surface of our own beautiful moon, including a visit to the Agnes Mary Clarke crater (yes an Irish woman has a crater named after her!) and a number of other sites visible with telescopes and binoculars.  A big local interest from our young audience, their curiosity sparking a long list of astronomical questions!  Clearly the future looks bright for astronomy in Mayo \u2013 so, let\u2019s keep the skies dark together and help children to name more stars in the sky than stars on the screen\u2026..!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caoimh\u00edn used Stellarium for his presentation; a free software that is available from Stellarium – Mayo Dark Sky Park<\/a>, which includes a free download with a localised backdrop of Ballycroy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
