“Friends of Mayo Dark Skies together with Dark Sky Ireland is hosting the 9th International Artificial Light at Night Conference<\/strong> (ALAN) in Westport<\/strong> from 28\u201331 October<\/strong>. This is a unique opportunity for Clew Bay to showcase Mayo Dark Sky Park – a rare and precious asset that sets our destination apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to urge all local businesses to support this event by reducing unnecessary lighting in the lead-up to, during, and ideally after the conference. Light pollution wastes energy, disrupts wildlife, affects human health, and dims our view of the stars. Fortunately, it\u2019s one of the easiest environmental issues to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simple steps include choosing warm-toned LED lights (2700K or less), shielding bulbs and angling lights downwards, and using lighting only when needed. Consider creating a Lighting Control Policy and training staff to minimise light pollution.
