Irish Astronomy Week - Mayo Events

    Mayo Events for Irish Astronomy Week  |  20-26th March 2023

    This event is jointly hosted by Newport Astronomy Club www.newportastronomyclub.com

    From the 20th to 26th of March 2023, the inaugural Irish Astronomy Week goes ahead with events taking place indoors and outdoors throughout the thirty-two counties. Also, during that week astronomers of all ages can enjoy a beautiful celestial waltz of the crescent Moon as it moves each evening past the bright planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars.

    In Mayo we have a full week of events:

    20th March 11am - Declan Holmes "Tour of the Solar System" Talk in Ballycroy Visitor Centre, Wild Nephin National Park

    21st March 7pm - ONLINE "Women in Dark Skies" our series continues with the talented Teddie Hwang, a dark sky advocate, musician and photographer.  Teddie will tell us about her work combining Dark Sky and the Arts. 

    22nd March 8pm - Collaborative event with Joyce Country GeoPark - this is a shared outreach event.  Georgia MacMillan will present on Dark Sky Tourism, followed by Astronomer (and organiser of the Irish Astronomy Week) Ronan Newman who will present amazing Spring sights in Astronomy.

    23rd March 8pm - Brian Wilson Astrophotographer from Mayo will give a talk on how to photograph the Milky Way, Aurora and other amazing night sky phenomena with your DSLR camera.  Hotel Newport, Mayo.  A shared hosting event with Newport Astronomy Club. 

    24th March 8pm  - Dark Sky Walk in Mayo Dark Sky Park. Led by Georgia MacMillan, this is part of the weekly dark sky walks series. Guiding small groups through the dark sky park after dark.  Please note this is part of an Irish Research Council project and participants may be invited to take part in an interview/survey.
