Reducing Light Pollution Ahead of ALAN (Artificial Light At Night) Conference

From Fionnán Nestor, Projects Officer, Wild Atlantic Way, Fáilte Ireland

“Friends of Mayo Dark Skies together with Dark Sky Ireland is hosting the 9th International Artificial Light at Night Conference (ALAN) in Westport from 28–31 October. This is a unique opportunity for Clew Bay to showcase Mayo Dark Sky Park – a rare and precious asset that sets our destination apart.

I would like to urge all local businesses to support this event by reducing unnecessary lighting in the lead-up to, during, and ideally after the conference. Light pollution wastes energy, disrupts wildlife, affects human health, and dims our view of the stars. Fortunately, it’s one of the easiest environmental issues to address.

Simple steps include choosing warm-toned LED lights (2700K or less), shielding bulbs and angling lights downwards, and using lighting only when needed. Consider creating a Lighting Control Policy and training staff to minimise light pollution. Check out the attached Guide to Reducing Light Pollution in Your Business.

Let’s work together to protect the integrity of Mayo’s dark skies for ourselves, our communities and our visitors. “
